The New York Stock Exchange (sometimes referred to as "the Big Board") provides a means for buyers and sellers to trade shares of stock in companies registered for public trading. The NYSE is open for trading Monday through Friday from 9:30 am -- 4:00 pm ET, with the exception of holidays declared by the Exchange in advance. The NYSE trades in a continuous auction format, where traders can execute stock transactions on behalf of investors. They will gather around the appropriate post where a specialist broker, who is employed by an NYSE member firm (that is, he/she is not an employee of the New York Stock Exchange), acts as an auctioneer in an open outcry auction market environment to bring buyers and sellers together and to manage the actual auction. They do on occasion (approximately 10% of the time) facilitate the trades by committing their own capital and as a matter of course disseminate information to the crowd that helps to bring buyers and sellers together. The auction process moved toward automation in 1995 through the use of wireless hand held computers (HHC). The system enabled traders to receive and execute orders electronically via wireless transmission. On September 25, 1995, NYSE member Michael Einersen, who designed and developed this system, executed 1000 shares of IBM through this HHC ending a 203 year process of paper transactions and ushering in an era of automated trading. As of January 24, 2007, all NYSE stocks can be traded via its electronic hybrid market (except for a small group of very high-priced stocks). Customers can now send orders for immediate electronic execution, or route orders to the floor for trade in the auction market. In the first three months of 2007, in excess of 82% of all order volume was delivered to the floor electronically.[23] NYSE works with US regulators like the SEC and CFTC to coordinate risk management measures in the electronic trading environment through the implementation of mechanisms like circuit breakers and liquidity replenishment points.[24] Until 2005, the right to directly trade shares on the exchange was conferred upon owners of the 1366 "seats". The term comes from the fact that up until the 1870s NYSE members sat in chairs to trade. In 1868, the number of seats was fixed at 533, and this number was increased several times over the years. In 1953, the number of seats was set at 1,366. These seats were a sought-after commodity as they conferred the ability to directly trade stock on the NYSE, and seat holders were commonly referred to as members of the NYSE. The Barnes family is the only known lineage to have five generations of NYSE members: Winthrop H. Barnes (admitted 1894), Richard W.P. Barnes (admitted 1926), Richard S. Barnes (admitted 1951), Robert H. Barnes (admitted 1972), Derek J. Barnes (admitted 2003). Seat prices varied widely over the years, generally falling during recessions and rising during economic expansions. The most expensive inflation-adjusted seat was sold in 1929 for $625,000, which, today, would be over six million dollars. In recent times, seats have sold for as high as $4 million in the late 1990s and as low as $1 million in 2001. In 2005, seat prices shot up to $3.25 million as the exchange entered into an agreement to merge with Archipelago and become a for-profit, publicly traded company. Seat owners received $500,000 in cash per seat and 77,000 shares of the newly formed corporation. The NYSE now sells one-year licenses to trade directly on the exchange. Licences for floor trading are available for $40,000 and a licence for bond trading is available for as little as $1,000 as of 2010.[25] Neither are resell-able, but may be transferable in during the change of ownership of a cooperation holding a trading licence. On February 15, 2011 NYSE and Deutsche Börse announced their merger to form a new company, as yet unnamed, wherein Deutsche Börse shareholders will have 60% ownership of the new entity, and NYSE Euronext shareholders will have 40%. On February 1, 2012, the European Commission blocked the merger of NYSE with Deutsche Börse, after commissioner Joaquin Almunia stated that the merger "would have led to a near-monopoly in European financial derivatives worldwide".[38] Instead, Deutsche Börse and NYSE will have to sell either their Eurex derivatives or LIFFE shares in order to not create a monopoly. On February 2, 2012, NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Börse agreed to scrap the merger.[39] In April 2011, IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), an American futures exchange, and NASDAQ OMX Group had together made an unsolicited proposal to buy NYSE Euronext for approximately US$11 billion, a deal in which NASDAQ would have taken control of the stock exchanges.[40] NYSE Euronext rejected this offer two times, but it was finally terminated after the United States Department of Justice indicated their intention to block the deal due to antitrust concerns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange

Its market cap rose nearly 18 percent from the end of last year,... to roughly 32-point-three billion U.S. dollar as of last week -- to sit at second place. The rise in market cap is attributed to the energy giant selling a piece of land in southern Seoul... for some 10 billion dollars to Hyundai Motor last year -- a price much higher than market expectations. A prolonged slump in oil prices also helped it maintain its upward streak,... thanks to reduced energy costs. Cosmetic company Amore Pacific also added its name in 2014. This comes on the back of the popularity of Korean cosmetic products, especially in China. Currently, it sits at eighth place,... with a market cap of 19 billion dollars. On top of that,... it was also able to boost its market cap thanks to a stock split last year. Samsung C&T,... which merged with Cheil Industries last year,... newly added its name to the top 10 list. With that, Samsung Group takes up four spots in the top 10. However, steelmaker POSCO,... which was number four in 2013,... got pushed out last year,... facing oversupply from China as well as a slowdown in the global economy. In 2013,... it's market cap stood at 24-point-3 billion dollars,... and fell to below 17 billion this year. The total market cap on the local bourse now stands at just under one-point-one trillion dollars,... up almost two percent from the end of last year,... and maintaining its upward streak for the fourth straight year. Looking to invest in China? Look no further than Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong, which are 50 percent cheaper than stocks listed in mainland China. 'I think China's A-shares are a bit expensive at the moment,' said Raymond Chan, chief investment officer, equity Asia-Pacific at Allianz Global Investors, based in Hong Kong. 'If you want to look at Chinese stocks, you should look at China's H-Shares - these are Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong, which trade at a 50 percent discount to A-shares, [listed in mainland China].' As for sectors, Chan is interested in the insurance space and companies in the industrial automation space. 'The Chinese labor market is expensive and companies have to spend more on automation,' he added. As for the disappointing export data out of China, Chan says weak trade isn't just a problem specific to China, but also the region, including Taiwan and Korea. Exports in China fell 5.5 percent in August, following an 8.3 percent decline in July. TheStreet's Scott Gamm reports from New York. Learn about Pape's Barefoot 60, 60, 6 challenges. TRANSCRIPT -------------------------- Welcome to the Barefoot Investor's 60 60 6 challenges – Helping you get more money smart by the minute. My interest in investing began earlier than most. I remember being a primary school kid and my dad, who was just a modest fuel truck driver... paid my pocket money in the form of one share in an Aussie blue chip. Now, it was totally exciting to know that I was a part-owner in one of the country’s biggest businesses, and it sparked my interest to learn more about investing. Now, this was life-changing for me and I hope buying your first lot of shares will be just as life-changing for you too. It’s never too late to become an investor but starting early does help you take advantage of the awesome power of compounding. 60 seconds challenge So, for your 60 second challenge I want you to discover the difference investing for the long term can make to your returns. Let’s say you sock away fifty bucks a week and invest it into the share market each time you get to a thousand dollars. Assuming your shares earn 9 per cent a year, in 30 years you’ll have 400-grand. But you'll also have only invested 78-thousand dollars of your own dough. So jump on to MoneySmart’s Compound Interest Calculator to see, with a little regular watering, just how big your investment seeds can grow. 60 minute challenge Okay, in preparation for buying your first parcel of shares you need to get your accounts in order. So, set up a trading account with a discount online broker, which is generally cheaper than using a full-service broker. Now, your bank may even offer a free brokerage deal when you open up a trading account that's linked to your everyday bank account. Making your first trade isn’t as scary as it sounds, in fact it’s kinda like internet banking. You can start with as little as a thousand bucks, just transfer whatever money you’ve set aside to invest to your trading account. You'll see it sitting there as cash until you’re ready to invest it. You're now set up to place your first ‘buy order’. 6 day challenge So today, for my 6 day challenge, I encourage you to make your first share investment... So long as you don’t have any outstanding consumer debt and you have at least a couple of grand set aside for emergencies. For your first investment, I’d suggest looking at a Listed Investment Company or LIC for short. LICs invest in a range of companies and other assets and pay dividends from their earnings. Look for one with a solid track record and low management fees. Check out MoneySmart to find out more about LICs to make sure they’re right for you. And you don’t need to check the share price every day. That’s for traders, not long-term investors. Just set aside an hour a month to check how the company is doing – focusing more on dividends and the underlying investments than the share price. So if you’ve been putting off dipping your bare foot into the stock market, it might be time to start now.
