  • Which shares are exempt from UK inheritance tax? | IG

UK tax authorities have allowed some classes of shares to be handed down after death without the need for the beneficiary to pay tax on transfer. But which ones qualify? Chris Boxall, from Fundamental Asset Management, explains that shares allowed to be transferred without a tax liability are all listed on the London Stock Exchange’s junior market: Alternative Investment Market (AIM). Crucially, however, not all AIM-listed shares qualify. Chris says it can be an extremely expensive error to hold unqualified stocks at the wrong moment. Because the tax authorities do not provide a definitive list of shares that qualify, the challenge for investors keen to shelter money under the scheme is to continuously audit their portfolio to ensure that the shares they invest in remain on the list of a...

코스피 '톱10' 지형도 격변… 아모레 뜨고 포스코 지고 There's been a change in the top ten listed firms on Korea's main bourse. The Korea Exchange attributes the shake up to faltering oil prices as well as the boom in Korea's cultural industry. Kim Min-ji has the details. The top 10 listed shares by market cap on Korea's benchmark KOSPI have undergone quite the transformation over the past few years. According to the Korea Exchange,... only seven of the top ten in 2013 have managed to remain in the big league. Among them, Samsung Electronics was the only one to retain its position. It stays at number one. While still on the list,... four companies -- Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Mobis, SK Hynix and Naver -- saw their ranks slip. Only two, including Korea Electric Power Corporation,... moved up. In fact, KEPCO has been one of the strongest performers this year. Its market cap rose nearly 18 percent from the end of last year,... to roughly 32-point-three billion U.S. dollar as of last week -- to sit at second place. The rise in market cap is attributed to the energy giant selling a piece of land in southern Seoul... for some 10 billion dollars to Hyundai Motor last year -- a price much higher than market expectations. A prolonged slump in oil prices also helped it maintain its upward streak,... thanks to reduced energy costs. Cosmetic company Amore Pacific also added its name in 2014. This comes on the back of the popularity of Korean cosmetic products, especially in China. Currently, it sits at eighth place,... with a market cap of 19 billion dollars. On top of that,... it was also able to boost its market cap thanks to a stock split last year. Samsung C&T,... which merged with Cheil Industries last year,... newly added its name to the top 10 list. With that, Samsung Group takes up four spots in the top 10. However, steelmaker POSCO,... which was number four in 2013,... got pushed out last year,... facing oversupply from China as well as a slowdown in the global economy. In 2013,... it's market cap stood at 24-point-3 billion dollars,... and fell to below 17 billion this year. The total market cap on the local bourse now stands at just under one-point-one trillion dollars,... up almost two percent from the end of last year,... and maintaining its upward streak for the fourth straight year. Of that, the top ten makes up third of the KOSPI's total market cap. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News. Learn about Pape's Barefoot 60, 60, 6 challenges. TRANSCRIPT -------------------------- Welcome to the Barefoot Investor's 60 60 6 challenges – Helping you get more money smart by the minute. My interest in investing began earlier than most. I remember being a primary school kid and my dad, who was just a modest fuel truck driver... paid my pocket money in the form of one share in an Aussie blue chip. Now, it was totally exciting to know that I was a part-owner in one of the country’s biggest businesses, and it sparked my interest to learn more about investing. Now, this was life-changing for me and I hope buying your first lot of shares will be just as life-changing for you too. It’s never too late to become an investor but starting early does help you take advantage of the awesome power of compounding. 60 seconds challenge So, for your 60 second challenge I want you to discover the difference investing for the long term can make to your returns. Let’s say you sock away fifty bucks a week and invest it into the share market each time you get to a thousand dollars. Assuming your shares earn 9 per cent a year, in 30 years you’ll have 400-grand. But you'll also have only invested 78-thousand dollars of your own dough. So jump on to MoneySmart’s Compound Interest Calculator to see, with a little regular watering, just how big your investment seeds can grow. 60 minute challenge Okay, in preparation for buying your first parcel of shares you need to get your accounts in order. So, set up a trading account with a discount online broker, which is generally cheaper than using a full-service broker. Now, your bank may even offer a free brokerage deal when you open up a trading account that's linked to your everyday bank account. Making your first trade isn’t as scary as it sounds, in fact it’s kinda like internet banking. You can start with as little as a thousand bucks, just transfer whatever money you’ve set aside to invest to your trading account. You'll see it sitting there as cash until you’re ready to invest it. You're now set up to place your first ‘buy order’. 6 day challenge So today, for my 6 day challenge, I encourage you to make your first share investment... So long as you don’t have any outstanding consumer debt and you have at least a couple of grand set aside for emergencies. For your first investment, I’d suggest looking at a Listed Investment Company or LIC for short. LICs invest in a range of companies and other assets and pay dividends from their earnings. Look for one with a solid track record and low management fees. Check out MoneySmart to find out more about LICs to make sure they’re right for you. And you don’t need to check the share price every day. That’s for traders, not long-term investors. Just set aside an hour a month to check how the company is doing – focusing more on dividends and the underlying investments than the share price. So if you’ve been putting off dipping your bare foot into the stock market, it might be time to start now.

Because the tax authorities do not provide a definitive list of shares that qualify, the challenge for investors keen to shelter money under the scheme is to continuously audit their portfolio to ensure that the shares they invest in remain on the list of approved companies. Boxall explains that there are circumstances where a company can qualify initially, but a change in some aspect of its operation may then lead to it being excluded from the list. He also emphasises the need to continuously research the shares that you have in any portfolio to ensure that you maintain the returns that you require to hit your investment goals. Boxall looks at some of the reasons as to why some companies’ shares may not be allowed under the scheme, including a dual listing, or if they hold ‘excepted assets.’ Learn more about IG: https://www.ig.com/uk?CHID=9&QPID=1414138388&QPPID=1 Twitter: https://twitter.com/IGcom Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IGcom Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iggroup.android.cfd&hl=en_GB iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ig-trading-spread-betting/id406492428 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/igcom Google +: https://plus.google.com/u/0/108999047065291192896 IG empowers informed, decisive, adventurous people to access opportunities in over 15,000 financial markets. Income from sale of shares needs to be accounted for while filing for returns during income tax filing. Here is what you must know. In this particular web series, we are discussing various things people need to keep in mind when filing for taxes (income tax). In this segment, we will discuss the various things you need to keep in mind if a person has actually made some money while selling shares last year. Now, when we are talking about selling shares, we are going to restrict ourselves to shares of listed companies, which are basically shares bought and sold on stock exchanges. The good news is that with me is that expert Swami Saran Sharma. Welcome Swami! Swami, a person had a great time last year, sold shares, made money, not the time has come to report the whole thing to the tax authorities. Now, what are the things that he or she needs to keep in mind while filing for taxes and are there some tax deductions available? Swami Saran Sharma: As you mentioned, if the shares are listed and they are transacted on the stock exchanges, in that case, if the shares were held by the assessee (taxpayer), for more than a year, there is no taxation at all i.e. fully exempt from income tax. In case of the period of one year holding is not complied, say one holds it for three months and sells (the shares), it is subject to short-term capital gain(s) (tax) which is 15% flat taxation. Udayan Ray: Wonderful information. I think what the tax authorities are trying to do here with this kind of tax structure is that is to ensure that people hold on to their shares for some time, which actually is a smart thing. The longer you hold, typically, (if) you have a basket of shares, you start making money. If people want to have more information about tax filing, they can follow this web series or our various social media platforms and also on our website www.fundoomoney.com
